For a person who really craves stability and status quo, I do my best to challenge others to step outside their comfort zone on a regular basis. Lately, my dad’s been taking the brunt of my encouragement: first by taking his yoga practice to a studio, but also by allowing his crazy daughter to make him try new-to-him foods and recipes. When a Sunday night rolled around, Dad and I found ourselves without the usual company – my brother and my husband – so I talked him into a nice meal out.

Momocho has been on my foodie to-do list for a very long time. Along with Parallax, Tommy’s, Velvet Tango Room and the majority of the restaurants in Little Italy, I’ve found myself picking another locations, saying “we’ll go there next time”. But suddenly Momocho was putting itself in front of me regularly recently: first with the discovery of this Unique Eats feature, then by several others telling me of their dinner reservations for the mod mex joint. The universe was guiding me towards Ohio City and as he was feeling adventurous that night, Dad and I mutually agreed to check it out.

We were seated in the first floor bar area at a six top. Immediately you notice the mod mex influence in the artwork and décor around you:

At the far end of our six top, another party of two were sat. Turns out they had made the drive all the way from Columbus that Sunday JUST to check out Momocho after seeing it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. That’s dedication to the name of eating well!

As we soaked in the ambiance of the bar area, we started with lime margaritas and perused the menu. Taquitos were in order as Dad and I were willing to share our dishes. It was quite difficult deciding on which to choose, but our server Brooke kindly and patiently answered all of our questions.

I decided to start my meal with the warm green bean + fennel ensalada with limon-feta-cilantro vinagretta, radish and cotija cheese:

This was as big winner in my book. The warmth of the dish made the cotija just gooey enough to make this veggie salad feel naughty. I’m always excited to see fennel incorporated into a dish, and was very pleased to see it in a warm salad option. The neat thing about this is that it could be served cold, taste just as good but give the diner another tasting experience. This is one that I hope to recreate at home!

Part foodie win and part “you go dad” moment, PIP Dad took a leap and ordered the chancho taquitos: adobo braised wild boar which was paired with pomegranate barbacoa sauce and the oaxacan red chile and chocolate mole:

Dad and I both highly enjoyed the boar which had a great flavor. His accompanying sauces were counterbalances to one another: one hot and one sweet. We found ourselves taking alternative bites of boar: one with pomegranate sauce and then one with the chocolate mole. Stab, sauce, eat and repeat. Definitely a solid, hearty choice.

As sucker for the words “fish tacos”, I ordered the pescado taquitos: a cebiche style mahi mahi served with pineapple & jicama guacamole and a tomatillo verde:

When ordering my main, I made sure to get an option that included their world famous guacamole. And now I know why it lives in infamy: that stuff was damn good. I loved the flavor of my mahi mahi and how it paired with the spice of the tomatillo verde. And those peppers and onions underneath made this veggie lover extremely pleased. Between all the food and flavors, both Dad and I had to go home with to-go boxes – also appropriately mod mex themed!

Who knew taquitos could be so filling?!

LONG STORY SHORT: Why did I wait so long to drop into this Ohio City gem?! After all this time of pushing others out of their comfort zones, I’m glad that my dad’s willingness to try a new-to-him spot helped me discover another place that I love in Cleveland. Now I just can’t wait for warmer temperatures as I hear they have one killer patio. Margaritas, guac and chips on a warm summer day? Sign me up for a return visit now!

A few Thursdays back, Hans and I headed out on a brisk February night to a location more known for its tropical temperatures: the Rainforest at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. That evening, the Cleveland Zoological Society held its Animal Attractions food and wine event in the space to raise funds to support its mission as they create compelling experiences that connect people with wildlife and inspire personal responsibility for conserving the natural world.

It’s hard to believe that The Rainforest is celebrating its 20th year anniversary in 2012. I remember my first grade school field trip to the spot and the exact details of the educational activity . I was OBSESSED with preservation for months at the age of 9 and remember walking my Parma side street asking my neighbors for donations to “Save the Rainforest!!” Just shows how important educational funding can be! But as for 28 year old me, I was excited for both the education experience and the treats we’d find!

Upon entering, we were greeted with a glass of champagne (always a good thing for me) and then found our way to the Amazon Café. While the event started at 6:00PM, our arriving at 7:00PM meant missing out on a few of the restaurants as they had already run out of food – there was a hungry bunch in attendance that night!

Luckily, Paladar Latin Kitchen still had chile-spiked chocolate brigadeiros to spice up things:

…and Fahrenheit – with Chef Rocco Whalen from recent Food Network Fat Chef fame – had plenty of bacon wrapped dates, quail and sweet potatoes. I could have eaten the quail like chicken wings all night long if given the opportunity!

Creekside Restaurant & Bar came ready to serve with plenty of chicken milano, potato pancakes and various specialty tortes:

Their location down in Brecksville has one of the most beautiful patios in Northeast Ohio. The perfect spot to relax with a glass of white wine on a warm summer day – I can’t wait to get back there again!

As I saw a familiar face with Chef Jeff Jarrett behind the table, AMP 150 Restaurant & Bar’s celery root soup knocked it out of the park.

No matter what soup comes out of that kitchen, I’ve always been a fan. I hope this is on the menu the next time I visit the restaurant.

We then headed into the exhibit hall to find Tree House Gallery & Tea Room serving a key lime curried chicken with grapes and almonds:

We also found a table full of friends as Whole Foods Market Cedar Center shared tofu skewer and tropical quinoa salad:

I love when “unusual” grains such as quinoa are served at food and wine events. It was fun to see guests walk up to the table, unsure of what was on the plate, and then end up loving it. I happily chowed down on a plate of the quinoa as I catch up with their Community Manager Lisa and the rest of the team from WFM.

On the stairway landing, House of Blues had some pulled pork sliders that Hans very much enjoyed. They were also giving away tickets for upcoming events but unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage of the concerts due to scheduling conflicts. It was a nice bonus from the concert venue. Also, I must note there were plenty of bar stations around the Rainforest to keep you well hydrated – I never was without a beverage!

Throughout the Rainforest, members of the Zoo staff were presenting on various love & relationship based topics (it was the Thursday before Valentine’s Day after all) and how they occurred in the wild. From The Mating Game, to My Two Dads: Same-Sex Couples in the Animal Kingdom, they covered all the bases. They weren’t even afraid to get a bit scandalous:

We also had fun seeing creatures of all shapes and sizes – and much closer than you’d expect to as animal handlers were places around the venue introducing guests to the residents of the Rainforest.

While we were happy to meet those animals, we were excited to run into some familiar faces.

Old college friend and former intern Brendan works for the zoo – and was recently promoted! Congrats to him! While catching up with Brendan, our blog partners in crime – Team WhyCLE – appeared after a long night of texting in a space with little cell phone coverage. Who knew the tropical rainforest wasn’t covered by AT&T? (Group pic from WhyCLE’s event recap – she even included the old school 1992 Rainforest song YouTube clip!)

After a night of good eats and plenty of drinks, we had a lovely time at Animal Attractions. The Cleveland Zoological Society holds events throughout the year, so visit their website to see what’s up this Spring. I’m already looking forward to Twilight at the Zoo – no excuses, I WILL make it this year!!

Disclosure: I was provided a media pass to the Animal Attractions event via the Cleveland Zoological Society. My thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

David H.: I’m David from http://www.runningbecauseican.com, and while I’m not from Ohio and don’t live there, my in-laws are in NE Ohio in Cortland, just north of Warren. I’ll be running the Cleveland Marathon in May!

RECOMMENDATIONS OF CLE BLOGGERS BY OTHERS:

From Crystal: Another CLE blogger is Mary of Adventures of a Foodie Wannabe: http://adventuresofafoodiewannabe.tumblr.com/

From Jill: My favorite Cleveland blogger is the Mommy in Law (aka Roni). She’s hilarious and irreverent and can be found at http://mommyinlaw.com/ She is a mother of two and a lawyer who was recently laid off by her firm.

From Anna: My other favorite CLE blogger is Jessica of http://mojamala2.wordpress.com. I love reading about her training and race recaps, which help keep me motivated, along with the chronicles of her adventures with her sister.

From Tammy: I’d also recommend The Winey Mom an Aurora wine lover, for some great wine reviews and recommendations.

PIP Aunt Kat suggested checking out Thrifty Volunteer.

From Lynne@lgsmash: I met Allison earlier this year and she’s from the CLE! I love her blog: http://www.confessionsofaclehabitant.com/

From Amanda: Although she describes herself as “just one more mom with a blog”, I like iNeed a Playdate because she strikes a balance between both her challenges as a mom and her separate personal interests..

Also from Amanda: Cleveland Centennial (http://clevelandcentennial.blogspot.com) – David Hansen is a local actor and playwright and often blogs about topics related to whatever he’s working on. For instance, right now you’ll find many posts related to his current production Mysterious Affair at Styles. I geek out over theatre so I’ve really been enjoying his behind the scenes look at the production process.

If all of those don’t keep your Google Reader full of posts, I don’t know what will!! Thank you all for participating and for supporting our blog community!

As a child born in the 80′s, one of my earliest memories is watching MTV. Lionel Richie’s Dancing on the Ceiling was pretty epic to this girl at the ripe age of three. But while I love me some Lionel, my favorite songbird will always be the one and only Whitney Houston.

I’ve written about my love of karaoke so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that my earliest Whitney memory involves just that. Setting the scene: at the Cleveland Home & Garden Show while standing in front of a faux home setup, imagine a Punky Brewser type five year old holding on to a microphone with both hands while doing her best to squeak out How Will I Know. As my dad kept an eye on his overly musically ambitious daugher, my mom heard me singing from the mock home a few booths down and knew it was her daughter rockin’ the song. I went home with a cassette tape of my performance thinking it was my start as a recording artist.

Whitney would continue to appear at other karaoke related memories (including the time when I was 9 and had a breakdown with someone else sang So Emotional), but also pop up via school related performances (One Moment In Time was always the closer to our marching band’s Homecoming show). But even as I grew older, I refused to let go of my Whitney karaoke connection. On Saturday nights at the Inn Between in North Royalton, a long time friend and karaoke DJ Dave knew better than to let someone else sing *my song*, I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

The news hit Saturday night of her passing. I was shocked. Some have said that I shouldn’t have been due to her history, saying “I’m surprised she lasted this long”. Nevertheless, I continued to sing along with her as CNN showed various performances of her throughout the years and as we all speculated on Twitter that night.

Then Sunday morning, I was on my mat at Nishkama when she popped up again in my life. Tracy was about 70 minutes into kicking our behinds with a hot sweaty flow when she shared this quote that Whitney said back in 2002:

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy.”

My head popped up from child’s pose with a look of wonderment, the quote hitting me hard. She knew she had amazing talent, knew how to use it and had the confidence to show us all. She was also fully aware of her demons and knew what held her back from reaching her goals, from fulfilling her potential. The question in each moment became which entity she was going to be towards herself that day: the one that built her up or the one that tore her down.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot from the one and only Whitney Houston. As a child, she showed me the power behind a strong performance when you believe in your talent. Now as an adult with that quote, Whitney’s showing me the power in positive thinking, rational decisions and self-care. Her words show the importance of believing in yourself in your moments of strength and in your moments of weakness.

For Whitney, I’ll do my best to take the high road as I continue my path towards a healthier, happier me. As she’s inspired me, I hope my favorite songbird of all time will continue to do the same for you.

FIRST OFF: I’m thrilled at the response for my post from Tuesday! Since there’s been so much interest, I’m giving you all more time to add your blog info or the info for your favorite Cleveland blogger to the comments. Head on over to the post check out all the great submissions and continue to share the #CLE blogger love!

♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

Between the pictures on my phone and the little things that come up during the day, there’s no label that describes me better right now than “yogi”. Perhaps it’s the excitement leading up to my yoga teacher training next month, but all I want to do is spend time on my mat. But when I’m off my mat, I’m realizing there are some signs that I’ve fully embraced the yoga lifestyle. Here’s a hint if you think you may have too…

You’re still wearing yoga pants every day. Even though you’ve returned to an office job, those lululemons look great paired up with your black knee high boots and the right dress/sweater.

You take pictures of any inspirational yogic quotes whenever they pop up:

You send out email blasts to your all of your friends telling them about the free yoga classes at your studio: The next one is this Saturday morning at 8:15AM with Bethany at Nishkama!!

You get excited when a run blogger dedicates herself to 40 days of yoga. Case in point: see Kali’s beginning of her journey through Baron Baptiste’s 40 Days to Personal Revolution post.

You notice your yoga teacher brought a very apropos bottle of wine to your yoga all staff meeting. Love the instructions on how to “zinlighten”:

You get really excited when friends have breakthroughs on their mat: check out Maria’s post entitled Has Yoga Ever Made You Cry? and Rachel’s My First Unofficial Non-Beginners Yoga Class post. Both include great stories about how yoga’s taken them further than expected.

And finally: not necessarily a typically “yoga” thing to do, but you find yourself spending time in bed with males that aren’t your husband:

How about you? What little things have you noticed in your everyday life that show you’re a “yogi”, a “runner”, a “blogger”, etc.???

If you do a quick search of the @ClevelandMag handle, you’ll see a plethora of tweets were sent with suggestions.
And while the question was a nice kick in the pants for me to start a rehaul of the PIP blogroll page (still under renovations!), the “Queen of Blogger Meetups” and “Fairy Blogmother” of Cleveland in me just couldn’t help but agree with Kimberly’s tweet:

I’m insanely proud of the blog community here in Northeast Ohio. Every month when we gather for Ohio Blogging Association meetups, I’m blown away by the attendees’ commitment to bettering themselves as bloggers and as Clevelanders. No matter how long they’ve been blogging, everyone has something to share – both offline and online.

With that, I want Cleveland Magazine to know about ALL the blogs in our fair town. From food blogs to sports blogs, to mom blogs to running blogs, and everything inbetween: there is something for everyone in CLE’s blogosphere.

So here’s your shot Northeast Ohio bloggers: give yourself a blog shout out in the comments below! Introduce yourself and give your “elevator pitch” for your blog. Let CLE and the rest of the world know what you’re up to in your corner of blog land. Why did you start blogging? Why do you continue to blog? Share a fun fact or just say hi. And of course: don’t forget your URL!!!

Not a blogger yourself or just want to suggest your favorite CLE blog? Give your favorite blogger a shout out on their behalf. You know I’m always down to share the blog love here on PIP!!

Consider this a way to get yourself out there and a chance to meet some new-to-you blogs. I’ll do a recap later in the week of all your comments & responses. Let’s show Cleveland Magazine what us bloggers have going on!!

This weekend, I…

-bought an unlimited new student class pass to Ride + Workout (I’m going to spin my legs off as long as I don’t get lost in Lakewood)

-posted an ad for Nishkama’s advanced yoga teacher training modules on yogafinder.com

-ran into my dad on Saturday morning between yoga classes (he’s loving the Yoga Basics sessions)

-got questioned by a 19 year old – “what are you doing tonight?” – when buying four bottles of wine at Marc’s

-preformed a whirlwind cleaning of our house (well, Hans did the majority of it, I did an excellent job supervising from the kitchen)

-spent many Saturday afternoon hours making my usual far-too-much food spread for a Saturday night get together

-hosted eleven yoga teachers over my house (so much fun and so inspiring to be with such strong ladies)

-made this awesome pizza dip c/o Sarah’s blog (the yogis LOVED it!)

-continued my enjoyment of eating my savory oats with turkey bacon (I need all the protein I can get these days!)

-headed back to Nishkama for 90 minutes of hot and sweaty yoga Sunday morning (my biceps are still screaming this morning)

-lunched on leftovers of my infamous chicken salad and other party goodies with my mom and Hans

-hung out with my mom by simply lounging around on my couch while chatting away and watching trashy television

-discussed McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes with my brother (he’s already had his first of the season – I’ve never had one!)

-”watched” the Super Bowl while “writing” some blog posts (both of which I failed at…)

-attempted to beat Hans in Scrabble via our iPhones (did you know “quipster” is a word?)

-found some peace and happiness in a weekend filled of family, friends and loved ones. (It was GLORIOUS.)

What was the highlight of your weekend??

You’ve probably seen the “eleven things” meme rolling around blogland and – hurrah! – Stephanie from Hungry in Cleveland tagged me in her post this week. And so, I present to you my participation…

11 random things:

1. I’ve had two much better ideas for posts for today, but don’t have the emotional energy to write either right now. They’ll be ready next week but not today.

2. I eat my savory oats with pieces of bacon as my spoon. Don’t judge, it’s as awesome as it sounds.

3. When I’m yoga-ing, I feel guilty for not running. When I’m running, all I can think about is yoga.

4. I really love making Hans dinner when he gets home from work. Except I hate having to clean chicken. I make him do that.

5. I text my brother a silly photo of Grady nearly every day.

6. I worry about becoming a yoga teacher and not being able to do all the poses properly.

7. I love running into my Dad at Marc’s in the produce section. Makes me feel like I have a personal bodyguard keeping an eye on me.

8. Dove’s dark chocolate equals the awesomeness of Lindt’s dark chocolate. Thank you leftover candy from Sunday’s work event!

9. Nishkama’s opening a second location in North Olmsted on April 1st. I couldn’t be more excited to spread the yogi love westward!

10. Grady’s upset with me for going back to work during the day. He pouts for the hour before I leave and the hour after I get home. Then I give him a treat and all is good again.

11. With everything going on, I’m worried about biting off more than I can chew.

Steph’s Questions from her post:

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever eaten?

Sweetbreads at Lola.

What would your last meal be if you had a say in it?

There would be a lot of gluten, that’s for sure. My mom’s chicken paprikash would be on there, and apple pie a la mode.

What is your all time guilty pleasure food?

Ice cream. Honey Hut in Brecksville opens on March 1st.

What are you currently listening to?

A bunch of ridiculous Top 40 tunes for running, and Coldplay’s “Paradise”. In my car: WKNR 850 in the mornings and the Alan Cox Show in the afternoons.

What is your favorite sport (to play, watch, or both)?

I love going to baseball games.

One thing you are dying to try (this could be anything)

Now that I’ve gone spinning (LOVED it), up next is Zumba. I chickened out on the session last year at Fitbloggin’!

Fill in the blank: Food makes me _________.

Hungry. Inspired. Anxious. All of the above.

If you could have dinner with just one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

My dad’s mother. She passed when I was five years old and feel like we would have been fabulous together.

What is your “go to” restaurant for taking out of towners?

For the foodies: Deagan’s Kitchen & Bar or Fahrenheit. For the “ooh and ahh” factor: Melt Bar & Grilled.

What is your favorite holiday?

Columbus Day, as I have always finagled my way out of working it.

Okay, seriously: the Fourth of July. Since my birthday is July 1st, I celebrate it all the way through the end of the national holiday. Those fireworks are celebrating my birth AND the birth of our nation. (at least that’s what I believed growing up…)

What quote sums up your life right now?

“What you believe, you create.”
