#CLEfood: Cafe Avalaun’s Fresh Meals

It’s been more than a year now since I’ve stopped eating 100% gluten free (thanks pregnancy hormones!), but I have to admit I do miss that style of eating — I always feel so much better when off the gluten train. And in Cleveland, my resource for all things gluten free is Cafe Avalaun on Cleveland’s East side.

If you are not already familiar with the restaurant, Cafe Avalaun is Cleveland’s premier 100% gluten free café, bakery and creperie, specializing in local food, great coffee, crepes and pastries. And while they are 100% gluten free (no chance of cross-contamination for those with serious allergies), Chef Brian Doyle and his team just makes good food that tastes really good. You don’t have to follow a gluten free lifestyle to enjoy Cafe Avalaun’s eats!

To make things easier for their customers, they have entered the meal delivery service arena with their offering, Fresh Meals. Fresh Meals is a time-saving subscription-based meal service. Entrees are prepared by a chef, not you: no meal planning, no chopping, no cooking. It’s like takeout on demand, but super. hassle-free, and can help you adhere to an array of diets — including but not limited to Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegan, Nut Free, Whole 30 and more.

So, how’s it work?

  1. Choose Your Plan: 12 weeks, paid in full, at $125/week, or pay weekly at $135/week
  2. Choose Your Meals: They send you the menu on a Wednesday. You make your meal selections by Friday.
  3. Get Your Food. Pick up your meals between 3pm-7pm on Tuesday, or you can have it delivered between 5pm-8:30pm for an extra $10)
  4. Heat and Eat: No chopping, boiling, broiling or anything complicated. Just heat then eat!

How can you go wrong?! I found out that you can’t as we were able to try a week of their meal service program this past week.  I selected three meals: Brazilian moqueca (a fish stew with shrimp), Pakistani ground beef curry and a herb roasted chicken in a lemony sauce with sauteed swiss chard & paleo whips.

We received our three meals, two portions each — which, according to the cafe, consist of 6 oz. of locally-sourced protein and 2 cups of sides per meal. And when it came time for dinner, it really was as easy as advertised as each container had a label instructing you how to reheat the meals. Only one container involved heating up the oven — all the rest were on the stovetop.

In no time flat, thanks to Fresh Meals, I had a delicious dinner on the table on a work night in no time. Plus, it was good to know it was good for us too!

I will admit to microwaving the Pakistani ground beef curry (sorry chef!) but the container of that meal lasted me four sold bowls of meals over the course of the week. And the moqueca had an abundance of shrimp, so there is no scrimping when it comes to the amount of food you get with this program!
