DID YOU KNOW: The Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) is Cleveland’s oldest existing cultural institution. Founded in May 1867, it celebrates 150 years in 2017 of preserving Cleveland’s history and making it accessible to the public!
I suppose, over all that time, the average visitor’s first experience would include:
- A visit to Hale Farm and Village with their family
- A visit to the Costume Collection including Wow Factor: 150 Years of Collecting Bold Clothes
- A review of Euclid Beach Park Day
- A guided tour of the WRHS‘s Historic Mansions including the Hay-McKinney and Bingham-Hanna Mansions
- Visit the old Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel now located at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum
- A visit to a combination of their exhibitions — there’s just so much to see!
But my visits to the Western Reserve Historical Society haven’t been just run of the mill — they’ve been quite special. In fact, they’ve been for special events! For example, my first visit to WRHS as an adult was when my cousin was married in the picturesque Hanna Garden at the History Center in University Circle back in 2012 — it was a beautiful ceremony during a June afternoon!
But the special event that is always near and dear to my former-event-planner heart is the Cleveland Magazine Silver Spoon Awards Party, benefiting the Arthritis Foundation. For the 2015 food and wine event, the planning committee decided to move this 1000+ person food and wine event to the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. At first, some of us were concerned about fitting 40+ restaurants, 10+ wineries, 100+ silent auction packages and more, but we were mistaken to be worried as Crawford turned out to be the perfect place to hold our soiree.
Here’s a glimpse into the 2015 and 2016 Silver Spoon events featuring the beauty of the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. I really think Orville McEachron’s photography below really highlights just how well events can be held in a space like Crawford! Attendees LOVE having something to do (like checking out all the unique displays and memorabilia) while dining around the museum. Plus, how many Northeast Ohio events can you go to and say you rode a carousel?!

Disclosure: The Western Reserve Historical Society asked me to help promote their attractions and the survey in this post. I will receive a complimentary membership for sharing this info. I am also a volunteer of the Arthritis Foundation serving on the Silver Spoon event committee. As always, my thoughts and opinions are my own. Professional photos c/o Orville McEachron Photography.
