How I Found Clarity in 2012 (a very simple recap)

One year ago, I wrote 2012: a year of simplicity, a year of clarity. The goal for 2012: Keep it simple.

In those three words, I found a focus for the year ahead and promised myself a few things.

Less familiarity. More adventure.

Less running away. More embracing.

Less negativity and snark. More inspiration and motivation.

Less uncertainty. More clarity.

I’ve tried looking through the 162 posts I wrote in 366 days.  And in this – my 600th post – I’m finding it difficult to summarize this year with a bunch of randomly hyper linked words to highlight all the ups and downs.

There are still days when I want to quit, when I want to give in. But the potential of being able to start anew is the most exciting thing to me. No matter how many times I fail, I get the opportunity to try again. It’s a mantra I live by daily – because I make mistakes and screw up more often than not.

This year has been very good to me. It’s also been one of the most challenging yet, but those difficult moments set me up for success in the coming year.

So thank you 2012. You’ve been a PITA at times, but such a joy at others.

And now? “The rock candy’s melted, only diamonds now remain.”

What events are you looking forward to in January 2013?

Disclosure: I have financial compensation affiliations with some of these companies as an employee/event organizer, generally support these organizations in my spare time, or were provided this information to share as an FYI. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

what’s in store for 2013: a year of self-worth

Our 2012 Staycation has been treating us well. All this downtime filled with family, down-dogs, real dogs and a wide open schedule has given me an opportunity to reflect on how I can hit the reset button before January 1st hits. With the last few months of the year helping to bring me back to a stable routine, I want to hit the ground sprinting into the new year.

My commitment for 2013? To focus on the concept of self-worth. Giving myself permission to enjoy things without necessary justification. Being kind to myself (instead of so so incessantly judgy). Allowing for a bit of self-care now and again.

With that intention, these are the things I’m treating myself in 2013 – because I deserve it.

once a day: do a handstand

As my upper body strength continues to improve, as do my arm balances and inversions. By the end of 2011, I was hitting Bakasana (AKA crow pose) regularly, and now by the end of 2012, Eka Pada Bakasana (AKA running man) has become a regular occurrence on my mat. If I can just take a moment every day just to play with the prep for fully turning myself upside down, I’ll be handstanding in the middle of the room by December 2013. What you believe, you create.

I want one of these CrossFit Racer Long Bra Tops in every color possible. Built for CrossFit, perfect for yoga.

once a week: publish a vlog

I had really hoped to implement this in 2012, but to be honest, I was nervous of how silly I tend to be on camera.  I created my YouTube channel in the summer, hardly doing much with it. But upon watching some of my old Vimeo vlogs, I’m looking forward to busting out my FlipCam to document some future adventures. And more talking with my hands.

once a month: treat myself to a spa/beauty treatment

While I would like that to mean getting a massage every month (doesn’t THAT sound glorious?!), I’m willing to accept even a basic eyebrow-waxing or a pedicure. Just a little extra bit of self-care in the beauty department is going to help me feel just a bit more confident in the year that I head towards my thirties.

once every quarter: run a race

I adore my yoga practice, but I’m craving cardio. Some scheduled races will help get me to the gym in the new year. Here’s what the breakdown tentatively looks like:

Q1: Not sure quite yet. My brother suggested Tackle the Tower in February.
Q2: Either the 5K or the 10K of the Cleveland Marathon (psssst: I’m a 2013 guest blogger!)
Q3: The 3rd annual Run for the Pierogies in July
Q4: plan the 2013 Jingle Bell Run/Walk (it technically is “running” an event…)

The tools of the task: the old standbys of my gym bag and these new Bose SIE2i Sport Headphones. I love the button the cord to help control volume levels.

once every six months: teach a yoga workshop/hold a yoga event

I have my first 2013 yoga workshop already scheduled, so we’re on our way! I’m hoping to make this happen more than twice a year, but knowing my 2013 work events schedule & Ohio Blogging Association plans, I’m trying to be realistic.

once a year: take an EPIC journey

We’ve been lucky enough to dabble around regionally in 2012, but I’m thinking bigger for the new year. Perhaps with…

I apparently also need to ask for more PTO.

What are you planning to do in 2013 – once a day, a week, a month or whenever?
